A Timeless Tale – Chapter Twenty Three

Living a Life in the Kingdom of God – Continued

We continue this week, discussing the third part of our three-part human make up – the spirit.

Living in the Spirit.

Before beginning this week’s session I need to, once again, emphasize an important point. As a young man training for the priesthood, my tutor used to say over and over again, “Repetitio est mater studiorum” repetition is the mother of studies. As you can see through this series, I have adopted this approach.

Unlocking Wealth in Business

Today more than ever there seems to be a widespread feeling that the Spirit of the Lord is showing us that our walk with Him needs to be more practical. Gone are the days where believers hear the word of God and are unable to practically see it outworking in their lives, as fruit of what they have heard. One of the reasons for this is….’My people perish for a lack of knowledge…”

Getting To Know Him

In the world today communication is very important. In worldly terms – success is borne out of effective communication.

We learn communication from teaching institutions but primarily from our upbringing. This would not only be the spoken word but body language as well. We sometimes take these skills for granted – spare a thought for the visually and hearing impaired – how would our lives change if suddenly we could no longer see or hear?

Whenever there is success in a sports team, a business or a marriage, we will find effective communication.

Ray Prayer 7If we communicate better, this results in improved relationships and improved relationships mean unity. Where there is unity there is strength.
Stop to look at ourselves for a moment – how are we communicating in our present circumstances? (In our work and personal relationships). RememberRay Prayer 3 communication is not only the spoken word but body language as well!
We use communication for many different purposes. One such use is to find out information. In other words when we meet people for the first time we try to find out more about them – we ask questions. To those we already know, we ask deeper questions to find out more about them and we will also share some of our opinions with them – this, so they will know more about us and we them. Rayer Prayer 5In this way we form meaningful relationships. Lastly, where we have emotional feelings for someone we tell them as much (“I love you”) and we get to know them more intimately as we learn to trust them with our emotions.

Looking at the spiritual world, God wants us to work in a similar manner. (Psa 105:4; Pro 8:17; Psa 46:10 and Jer 24:7). He gives us the tool of prayer to effectively communicate with Him. This truly is a gift from Him. Just as salvation is a gift from Him (we did nothing to earn it!) so prayer is also a gift from him.
Prayer is really nothing more than speaking to God. It is a tool which we can use to strengthen our relationship with Him.
We need to spend time with God in order to know Him better. This means reading His word and also fellowshipping with other believers. In our private times with the Lord, and during our day-to-day living , we must feel free to ask God questions in order to find out more about Him. We should also tell God how we feel about things – intimately. Jesus said, “All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore, I said that He (the Holy Spirit) will take of mine and will announce it to you.
Some would say…. “Why would such an almighty God want to hear these things from me? He has many more important things to work on…..” Also the scripture says that God knows all our needs before we even pray them, so why ask Him? The answer is simple…. God loves to hear from us and loves to communicate with us. His love for us is so great that He wants to be in constant communion with us. We know from our own experience, when you love someone you want to be with them – all the time!
Find time to commune with God and ask Him about the things that perplex you. Tell Him how you feel about some of the current situations in your life and tell Him about the things in the deepest part of your heart. It’s good to tell Him you love Him.

Ray Prayer 6

All these things will draw us into a deeper place with God and help us to better communicate with Him. Be like the Psalmist David, when he said, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
Better communication with God means we come to know Him better and therefore we are able to hear His Spirit within us. The more effectively we hear His Spirit, the more useful we can be in His service.

A Timeless Tale – Chapter Nineteen

Living a Life in the Kingdom of God – Continued

Managing Thoughts in our Minds.

Managing the thoughts in our minds is no picnic. It is an extremely difficult process and takes a great deal of focus and commitment.

In the process of managing thoughts, we have to navigate the minefield of our habits. We humans are creatures of habit. In the course of any twelve plus hour day, we unconscientiously follow many habits.

In her book, ‘Switch on your Brain’, Dr Caroline Leaf deals extensively with the issue of habits and how to separate those habits which are beneficial to the accomplishment of our goals and those habits which block the accomplishment of our goals.

I am a great believer in the process of examining our lifestyles, even to the point of physically listing things like thoughts and habits that we experience in any one day; analyzing the list and then focusing on removing negative thoughts and habits from our minds. Dr. Leaf offers a twenty one day “Detox Plan”, which is a plan to help people get rid of negative thoughts and habits. The Detox plan works on a basis of the fact that habits can be formed and eliminated over a twenty one day period.

I have mentioned in previous chapters, that, in the process of living in the Kingdom of God, here on this earth; God does not wave a magic wand of change, in response to our petitions for His support in us wanting to change our lifestyles. He wants US to use the faculties that He has given us, to bring about the necessary changes we desire in our lives. There is no quick-fix, magic wand solutions to living in the kingdom.

However, I also believe that God wants to coach us in this process.

In my day-to-day living, I call upon God frequently to ‘guide’ me in the many projects, large and small, I undertake. This very article, I am writing now, is as a result of my request for His guidance for me to produce words that will bring about life changing experience for those who read them.

What then are the essential faculties that He has given us as instruments to accomplish the changes that we want to see come about in our lives?

Firstly, there is our body, the magnificent collection of senses, mobility and physical responses to that most superb management system – our brain. Then there is the mind, or as the scripture refers to it – ‘the soul’. The soul consists of the emotion, will and intellect. Lastly there is the spirit, that most excellent device that hooks us up to communication with God.

If you give serious consideration to the power of the above faculties you will realize that the quick-fix, magic wand solution is not only non-existent, but put into the plainest language:  grossly immature thinking.

What we need to do is to take a closer look at the faculties God has given us and how we can best use each one, to keep us on the path of Kingdom Living and the ultimate benefits of health, wealth, peace and power in this life and eternal living in the next.

I will deal with these faculties in the following order:

  1. Body – The importance of our physical body and our gratitude for its function.
  2. Soul – Intellect, emotion and will.
  3. Spirit – The effective use of this vital channel for our communication to and from God.

In the next chapter, I will illustrate what is scripturally recommended for the successful function of the above faculties.

Please share this with your friends – you can never tell whose life might change, eternally, by your obedience to this request.

A Timeless Tale – Chapter Eighteen

Living a Life in the Kingdom of God – Continued

Role of the Mind

Each one of us is a result of the cumulative thoughts of our mind, since conception in our mother’s womb. Right from our conception we have accumulated thoughts. Certain of our thoughts are conscious thoughts which are dealing with the here and now and other thoughts are filed away in our subconscious mind.

Conscious thoughts are active in our minds throughout our day-to- day living (this also includes thoughts that are active in our minds as we sleep). Subconscious thoughts are brought into our conscious realm by ‘triggers’. Triggers come in the form of certain experiences we have in our lives that are revealed through our senses; sight, sound, taste, smell etc.
